About Shegaon

An ordinary municipal town/city nestled within the Buldana district in Maharashtra, Shegaon is a pilgrimage spot. It is located in Khamgaon Tehsil or sub-division and not a tourist spot with a lot of sightseeing options nearby. However, the small city in Maharashtra is renowned in neighboring places for housing the tomb of Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj, a holy pious man who is as famous as Shirdi Sai Baba. Besides, Shegaon is popular for its large-scale cotton production and several ginning and pressing cotton mills. The city can be accessed from both Nagpur and Mumbai located at distance of 300 kilometers and 550 kilometers respectively. Marathi is the local language spoken here.

Things To Do in Shegaon

As mentioned before, Shegaon is a religious spot for devotees and followers of Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj and his samadhi (tomb) is situated in the municipal city. Endless devotees from Vidarbha region in Maharashtra and neighboring areas visit this holy shrine every Thursday and on weekends. The Temple of Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj built on top of his holy tomb is a place to be visited on a trip to this city. The temple is managed by Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj Trust which supervises the daily administration of the temple. The number of pilgrims becomes huge on weekends and holy day of Thursday for which a special air-conditioned Darshan Bari (waiting line) is set up on the temple premises. The Ram Temple built on the premises of Sant Gajanan Maharaj Temple is visited by pilgrims on regular basis and on Ram Navami as well as Rushi Panchami when local fairs are organized in the area.

Shegaon is famous for Anand Sagar, an artificial water body with a meditation centre, landscaped garden, play ground for children, aquarium, temple and an open air theatre with fountain shows. The lake premise has been beautifully decorated artifacts and sculptures along with an amusement theme park with toy train rides.

There are a few sightseeing spots close to Shegaon in Buldana district which is located atop Ajanta Mountain range in Maharashtra. The Lonar Crater considered amongst the world’s five biggest craters and also world’s third largest salt-water lake is located in Buldana. Sailani Baba’s Dargah and Shri Hanuman Murti located in the district can also be visited on a trip to Shegaon.

How to Reach Shegaon

The closest airport to Shegaon is in Nagpur city situated at a distance of 316 kilometers and Shegaon Railway Station falls on the Howrah-Nagpur-Mumbai Line of Central Railway and connects major cities in India. It is also well connected by road via National Highway 6 easily accessed from Nagpur and Aurangabad city in Maharashtra. State Transport buses regularly ply on the route to Shegaon from Mumbai, Nasik, Akola, Amravati, Nagpur, Shivaji Nagar, Nanded, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Wardha and Yeotmal.
